Dairy photo - Hi, I've been looking at your photos, and found my Mum Millie Todd on the dairy photo. I live in Bedlington, Northumberland, but my family (Todds & Ulatts) are from Wheatley Hill. I had several holidays in WH with my Grandparents as a child & have many memories. Mum went to train as a nurse at Newcastle RVI shortly after this, and remained in Bedlington, after marrying my Dad. They married in WH Methodist church in 1955.... Collapse

Grateful Thanks - In seeking an elusive magazine published more than fifty years ago I chanced upon the WHHC website. In no time at all Margaret Hedley found the magazine in the library, scanned the article I sought and, through the magic of email, provided me with the material needed for my research, which I would add has no connection with Wheatley Hill. Winter and Ward Lineage Search - Both lines are from the Thornley, Wheatley Hill, Haswell areas in the mid 1800s - maybe earlier but I haven't searched any further back yet.||It appears that all the menfolk were miners . . . and my great grandmother Ward was said to have been a teacher or headmistress towards the end of the 1800s. It depended on who was recounting the information!||If any members or visitors to this site recognise any of the names and may be able to help I would be very grateful.||Thank you... Collapse

missed the bus - The last time I was at Wheatley Hill was one evening in 1962 when I was to meet a young Lady who I had made the acquaintance of at Durham Technical College.However I missed the Bus managed to get there on the next one, One hour too late alas! she didn't wait.The young Lady's name was Margaret Hedley.... fond memories - Hi, or shouldI say G/day from Melbourne /Aust. I worked at the pit from 1952 to my leaving for Australia in 1961, I was a colliery Bricklayer as was my brother Ted[Eddie] Hoban. Steve Regan was our foreman, Iworked with Reg Carr,Dennis, and Dave Carr andLes Gair. Iwas born at 14 Byron St then we moved into 10Stockton St next to the pit. My three other brothers John, George,Tommy and dad Johnny all worked down the pit.I still have fond memories at 80yrs old of the good mates I left behind at the pit, Congratuations to the History Club and the Photo's which brought back these memories to life, Laurence hoban.... photographs - I was looking through the photos,and I saw a face i new,i think it was 23.the boy at the back on the left is my 2nd cousin COLIN HALL.i have'nt seen him for years,but i still recognized him.I was very impressed with your site,keep up the good work.we live in the midlands,but are natives of the norh-east.i am from wheatley hill and my husband is from wingate.We visited the heritage centre a few years ago,bill[who i new from childhood]showed us around,we really were impressed.best wishes to all.... grandad mother wife all from wheatley hill - Great to visit your site as i was linked to w/hill with my family, grandad worked at pit TommyStoker, mam Ena both no longer with us, wife of 50 yrs Maureen Turnbull.I spent a lot of years in the village as a child and in later years. I worked at Wingate,and thornley, in 50s + 60s till I moved to midlands in 62. chris tarren good site keep it up.... Collapse

hutchinson family - i was just browesing and found the web sight, it was nice to see the history, and to see people and family in photographs.|after living in wheatley hill till 17yrs and the last time i was there was in 1985, when my father died william hutchinson.his family had lived in wheatley hill since 1920. i have down loaded photos|in which i have found relatives freinds and people from the past. well done to you all.|i hope i will be able to get in touch with your archives many thanks... THE SLACK FAMILY - I am originally from Haswell .But lived in Shotton from age 6 .I had a large family ,REAY and Sally Scott.Sidney ,Robert,Freddy ,Dixon ,Vera,Sheila Alan.JACKIE WHO WAS FATALLY AT SHOTTON PIT ON HIS SECOND DAY AT WORK.|My uncle Jack Slack and Aunt Martha lived at WHEATLEY HILL ,at the bottom of one of teh streets than arn down the hill..My cousin Derek wa sa son an dhe died in an accident at work whilst living at Shotton. Finding Family - Hello i found your site when looking for places that my father grew up around he was born in Thornley in 1921 his name was Dougie Ashford his family moved to Whitley Bay and then he came to Ireland, he had family still around Thornley, Cassop and Wheatly Hill.
